How to choose readings for your wedding ceremony

How to find a wedding reading that fits you perfectly — where to look, how many to have, who should read, and a note on copyright.
A well-chosen reading is one of the loveliest parts of a ceremony. It gives a special person a role, changes the pace, and says something you might not find the words for yourself. But with so much choice, how do you land on the right one? Here is how I help couples decide.
Start with a feeling, not a poem
Rather than searching for "wedding readings" and drowning in lists, begin with the mood you want. Do you want the room laughing? Welling up? Nodding along in recognition? Once you know the feeling, the right words are far easier to find.
Where to look for inspiration
- Poems — classic or modern, romantic or wry.
- Song lyrics — a line from "your" song can be more moving read aloud than sung.
- Books and films — a passage from a story you both love.
- Something written for you — a few lines from a friend or family member are often the most treasured of all.
A note on copyright
Many well-known poems and lyrics are still in copyright, which occasionally affects how they can be printed or reproduced. Don't worry about the details — part of my job is to help you choose something that fits beautifully and is used properly.
How many, and who reads?
One or two readings is plenty for most ceremonies — enough to add texture without slowing things down. Choose readers who will enjoy the moment, and I'll always guide them warmly on the day so nobody feels put on the spot.
The best reading isn't the most famous one — it's the one that makes your people turn and smile at each other.
